Cervical Cancer Awareness

Cervical Health Awareness

January is cervical health awareness month. The time of year when various national public service organizations, charities, professional medical associations and government agencies all work together to promote cervical health awareness, raise funds and hopefully get closer to finding a cure for cervical cancer and educating women about protecting themselves from HPV (human papillomavirus). HPV is a very common infection that spreads through sexual activity. It’s also a major cause of cervical cancer. These organizations are working hard year-round to find a cure and to lend assistance to those suffering from cervical cancer, and they need your help to spread the word and lend a helping hand. Raising awareness during Cevical Cancer Awareness Month in January will certainly help the cause, however this disease knows no boundaries and help is needed year-round.

Cervical Cancer Facts & Statistics

The American Cancer Society estimates that there are just under 13,000 new cases of invasive cervical cancer diagnosed each year in the United States and that approximately 4,200 women will die from the disease. Cervical cancer was once one of the most common causes of cancer death for American women. However, over the past 40 years, the death rate from cervical cancer has dropped by more than 50%. The primary reason for the reduced death rate has been the increased use of cervical cancer screening with the Pap test. This procedure can find changes in the cervix before cancer develops. It can also detect cervical cancer early – when it’s potentially most curable.
